Howdy, and welcome to the September edition of my (mostly) monthly author newsletter.

In August, I at last resumed work on the final edits of my next novel, The Crucible Tree, after putting it aside for a year. No word yet on when my publisher will be ready to take it into production. They will of course have their own thoughts about additional revisions before the book would go to press.

Book 3 in the series is roughly outlined and waiting in the wings, for when I have the mustard to start picking away at it. The plan is for a four-book series titled A Silence of Worlds. Yes, this idea of worlds gone silent is as ominous as it sounds.

CANCER UPDATE

I do continue to respond well to the new gene therapy treatments. I will be honest, folks – there was only a 25 per cent chance these meds would get where they need to go and do their job. After more than four months of treatment (with eight to go), medical imaging continues to show that things are improving and doing better than originally expected. Knock on wood that they continue to do so.

The ongoing side effects of this treatment, however, make it nigh impossible to commit a predictable number of hours a day to creative or professional work. I have stepped away from the day job as business writer and marketing consultant for hire at least until I finish the gene therapy treatment next spring. My focus through the winter will be to pick away at the fiction writing on my own time when I feel up to it.

CAN-CON

Meanwhile, my focus has turned to the fall conference season.

After a two-year pandemic hiatus, my local con, CAN-CON (The Conference on Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature), is back!

I will be attending CAN-CON in person, Oct. 14-16 in downtown Ottawa. It’s at the Sheraton, so if you are in the area and want to meet up in person for coffee sometime over that weekend, drop me a line.

For years, I have looked forward to when I might finally attend CAN-CON as a published author with novel in hand. And here we are at last. I won’t be overdoing it – my schedule includes just one commitment per day. I will be moderating one panel on indie book marketing, doing a reading from Bane of All Things, and also having a signing session.

WFC 2022

And then from Nov. 3-6, we have the World Fantasy Con in New Orleans. This one I will be attending virtually, though copies of my book will be on-site, included in grab bags for in-person attendees at the registration desk. Still awaiting word on where I might fit into WFC’s virtual program.

Reviews

Just this week, I at last surpassed 40 reviews/ratings on Goodreads.com! As I have said before, for any author who isn’t already one of the superstars, it’s a constant struggle to stand out and get noticed. Every review and rating counts. So, with any book you enjoy, please consider showing it some love on Goodreads and/or Amazon.

That’s all for now. As always, keep reading and stay safe!
